From jazz to classical and back again, Kim can "sing it all"

".....Our first dance was “L.O.V.E” by Nat King Cole and I have never heard it sung more beautifully. All of our guests commented that the music, including Kim’s lovely singing voice, was the highlight of their evening. Thank you Kim for a once-in-a-lifetime experience!" Cheers, Dan & Jenna

“Bach's alto writing is more for contraltos, but mezzo-soprano Kim Greenwood did it full justice. Her full, delicately rich voice was just as strong and effective in the low range as the higher. Her quality easily matched Rainer Roth's expressive oboe d'amore. Combined with Miriam Sonstenes's violin, it was one of the few times in the evening that I was lost in the music, unaware of the performers.” Jack Beukema

About Kim

From jazz to classical and back again, Kim can "sing it all". With a flair for phrasing, Kim's warm tone lends itself beautifully to standard ballads that embody the American Songbook repertoire.  She's an actor at heart and this comes shining through in her musical theatre and opera repertoire. Throw in some contemporary singer-songwriter, a dash of blues, some classic pop or put her in front of a 17 piece swing/latin big band and you've got the eclectic stylings that are Kim Greenwood.

Her vocal journey began as a young child singing Tin Pan Alley favourites around the piano with her Mum.  As a young adult, she discovered how fun karaoke is and how much she loved grabbing a microphone!  When Kim began studying at The Victoria Conservatory of Music (VCM), she became hooked on technique and discovered her love for opera.

Kim's lead operatic roles include Zia Principessa in Puccini’s "Suor Angelica" and Miss Todd in Menotti’s "The Old maid and the Thief" with The VCM's Opera Studio.  Other noteworthy performances include "Brahms Alto Rhapsody", Robert Fleming’s "The Confession Stone", and alto soloist for Handel’s "Messiah".  In Halifax, Kim loved performing at Grafton Street Dinner Theatre.  She was lead singer for NOVA, a dance band that specialized in Latin and older pop sounds and was lead singer for The SeaNotes Big Band in Oak Harbor, WA for two years.  Currently, she is the lead singer for The Commodores Big Band, a band with a 40 year history in Victoria.  More recently, Kim has formed her own ensembles and is collaborating with many of Victoria's wonderful musicians.  Last summer, Kim finished recording a 4 song demo and a CD will certainly be in her future!  In 2017 Kim will record Robert Fleming's "The Confession Stone" (Songs of Mary) and she has been invited to perform it again during Holy Week.

Kim is currently the Chair of Voice at The Canadian College of Performing Arts (CCPA) in Victoria and has loved every minute of teaching these aspiring performers for the past five years.  The development of the voice is a truly unique process and Kim delves into each student's persona to help bring out the performer in them based on a strong technical foundation.  Prior to CCPA, Kim taught privately for 13 years and she also taught at Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific.  She is the Past President of the Victoria Chapter of The National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and currently sits on the U-JAM board (Universal Jazz Advocates and Mentors).

Kim's goal is to help her students find confidence, enthusiasm and joy in singing, born of the healthiest technique, dedicated to cross-genre training, from belt through classical.  Kim is a graduate of The Royal Conservatory of Music and is so fortunate to have studied a number of years with renowned voice pedagogue Selena James.  Kim is certified in Somatic Voicework™, The Lovetri Method from the Contemporary Commercial Music Vocal Pedagogy Institute at Shenandoah University, Winchester, VA.

Kim's passions are performing and teaching.  For the past 15 years Kim's focus has been teaching and now she is excited to broaden her performance opportunities.  For Kim, performing and teaching feed off one another and she can't imagine doing one without the other.
